Periodic check-in and emergency video call: monitoring without micromanaging

Fall detection and the emergency button cover the sudden incident. But what about continuous monitoring of someone who spends hours alone? That's where periodic check-in and the real-time video call come in — two layers that keep the team safe without turning work into constant surveillance.

This article complements the lone worker protection guide and the breakdown of Man Down and SOS.

What periodic check-in is

Periodic check-in is an automatic safety verification, configurable for the whole company or for specific groups. At defined intervals, the worker gets a simple prompt:

"Are you OK?"

They just confirm. If there's no response within the configured window, the emergency can open automatically. The benefits are direct:

  • Continuous monitoring of whoever works alone;
  • Management of lone workers without calling every hour;
  • Compliance with internal safety protocols.

It's the difference between "no one spoke to the guard all night" and "the operation confirmed he's OK every shift".

Real-time video call

When voice isn't enough, the video call steps in. Teams and supervisors make video calls right in the app, integrated into the communication environment. Typical uses:

  • Instant visual communication during an incident;
  • Remote assistance and support for people in the field;
  • Fast validation of incidents, without dispatching a crew unnecessarily.

Which operations

Periodic check-in and video make the most sense where people are alone for long stretches: asset security, field technicians, maintenance in remote locations, operators in confined spaces. Combined with Man Down and SOS, they complete the four layers of protection described in the lone working guide.

All of it is part of BiPTT Safety, on the communication platform that over 250,000 workers already use. Talk to our team to design your operation's check-in and emergency protocol.

Frequently asked questions

What is periodic check-in?

An automatic safety check at configured intervals. The worker gets a simple prompt — "are you OK?" — and confirms. If they don't respond in time, the emergency can open automatically, alerting supervisors and dispatchers.

Can the video call be used in an emergency?

Yes. The real-time video call lets supervisors assess the incident remotely, give operational support and quickly validate the situation — integrated into the team's same voice communication environment.
