Single CCTV control room for supermarkets: how does it work?

A CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) system for a supermarket works by capturing and recording video from several cameras placed strategically throughout the store. The control room operators are responsible for managing and monitoring the video screens of each camera.

The cameras in this system are usually connected to the control room through cables or wireless networks. The control room may consist of a computer or a piece of hardware specifically designed for this purpose. The system can be configured to record footage continuously or it can be triggered to start recording when certain events occur, such as motion detection or the activation of an alarm.

The main function of a video motion detection (VMD) system is to relieve control room operators  of the difficulty of monitoring many screens that may not change for long periods, automatically detecting motion and alerting the operator when activity is detected

The recorded footage is normally stored on a hard drive or another digital storage device. Depending on the size of the supermarket and the amount of traffic in the store, the amount of storage required can be excessive . The footage can be stored for a certain period of time, such as a few days or a week, before being automatically deleted to free up space for new recordings.

The control room is normally monitored by security guards or other authorized personnel who can view the live and recorded footage of each camera. In some cases, the CCTV system can be integrated with other security systems, such as access control systems, to provide a comprehensive security solution for the supermarket.

The use of a surveillance camera system must always serve a specific purpose, which is the pursuit of a legitimate and necessary aim to achieve an identified goal. In the case of supermarkets, this goal is mainly to prevent theft,  losses and to monitor employee behavior.

A single CCTV control room for supermarkets enables the monitoring of all of the business's activities, regardless of the location of its branches. This means that a single management center can oversee all of the supermarket's operations through the surveillance cameras installed inside and outside the store.

How does communication between CCTV and employees work?

CCTV

Communication between CCTV staff and supermarket employees generally takes place through a combination of methods, depending on the specific configuration of the system and the supermarket's needs.

One common method of communication is through PTT (Push-to-talk) communication. This allows control room staff to communicate with supermarket employees in real time, which can be useful in situations where immediate action is required.

For example, if a CCTV operator detects suspicious activity on a camera screen, they can use PTT software to alert a security guard or another employee to investigate.

Another method of communication is through messaging or alert systems. There are PTT software solutions that also have features allowing CCTV operators to send messages or alerts to designated supermarket employees, such as managers or  security guards. These messages include information about possible security issues or other relevant events.

In some cases, CCTV and supermarket staff can also communicate in person. For example, if a control room operator needs to speak with a supermarket employee about a security issue, they can leave their control room and approach the employee directly.

Likewise, if a supermarket employee needs to report suspicious activity to the CCTV team, they can go to the control room and speak in person with an operator. However, in the face of instant communication, this approach becomes inefficient and unproductive.

In general, effective communication between CCTV and supermarket employees is essential to maintaining a safe and secure environment in the store. By establishing clear lines of communication and using a variety of communication methods, both teams can work together to identify and deal with potential security threats.

I need to introduce you to BiPTT, a software created with the goal of increasing the productivity of frontline teams through PTT communication. The platform allows the manager to have full control over the team and to build their company within it in the way that best meets their needs, with access to the creation of unlimited communication channels, being able to choose who talks to whom, sending alerts, accessing the call history and much more.

A cloud-based platform allows the management of multiple locations with a single login, improving the company's cybersecurity posture.
